The steer skull has long stood as a symbol of endurance, frontier life, and the stark beauty of the desert. In this project, we reimagine that iconic form through embroidery—using thread and stitch to capture both its strength and subtlety.

Built from multiple layers of embroidery thread, the skull takes on striking depth and dimension. Each curve and hollow has been carefully digitized, allowing the weathered texture of bone to be translated into something tactile and refined. As light shifts across the dense wool threads, the surface seems to echo the play of shadow and sun on a sun-bleached skull in the open landscape.

This motif also carries cultural weight. In Native American traditions, the steer skull has symbolized life, protection, and sacred ties to the land. In Western art, it has become a marker of resilience and the enduring spirit of the frontier. By stitching this image, we not only create an artwork but also connect to a history where material and meaning intertwine.

Technically, the design is stitched in two separate hoopings and then combined into a single piece. All the methods demonstrated here—from layering stitches to finishing techniques—are explained in detail in The Artful Embroidery Book. There you’ll also learn how to mount, trim, and prepare your embroidery for framing, so your finished skull feels complete and ready to display.
